Three Players Score as River Hawks Fight to 3-3 Tie

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (0-2-2) competed in a nail-biter against St. Bonaventure (0-2-2) on Sunday afternoon at Cushing Field, ending in a 3-3 double overtime tie.

"I think we did well," said interim head coach Mira Novak. "Our offensive help this game was definitely better than last game, so I think we just need to blend it all together with the defense and just make sure that the closer we get to conference, the better we get."

Emily Nelson (Peabody, Mass.), Kristin Birgisdottir (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) and Chaima Khammar (Cologne, Germany) each scored for UMass Lowell, earning their first points of the season.

The River Hawks dominated the first half on the offensive end, generating nine shot attempts while holding the Bonnies to none. Nelson led the way with two shots in the first half, while the remaining shots were balanced between the rest of the team. UMass Lowell finished the game with 26 shots to St. Bonaventure's nine.

The scoring run opened up in the second half for both teams, starting with a goal by Gretta LaCouture, who scored a chip shot over the head of Lauren Huff (Brandon, Fla.) off a cross from across the box.

UMass Lowell answered just three minutes later, thanks to a beautiful shot by Nelson after a corner and scrum in front of the net – her first career goal.

After Nelson's equalizer, the River Hawks went on a rampage, scoring two more goals. Birgisdottir dribbled the ball into the box and found the lower left corner of the net for an unassisted goal, her first of the season.

The River Hawks' third goal came from Khammar with a shot from the top of the box into the upper left corner, with an assist from Katelyn Vieira (Warwich, R.I.).

The Bonnies answered with two tallies of their own, scored by LaCouture and Sabrina Sousa-Sampson, and the game headed into overtime.

Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) notched two shots on goal in the overtime periods, pacing the way for UMass Lowell, as the River Hawks tallied four more shots than the Bonnies in the overtime stanzas. Neither team was able to capitalize on its scoring chances in extra time, however, and the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
