Mendick drafted in 22nd round of MLB Draft by White Sox

LOWELL, Mass. – Former UMass Lowell River Hawk shortstop Danny Mendick (Rochester, N.Y.) was selected on Wednesday by the Chicago White Sox with the 652nd overall pick in the 22nd round of the Major League Baseball Draft. Mendick becomes the 19th player in UMass Lowell history to be drafted and the first since pitcher Tyler Toyfair in 2013.

"I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches who have all been there and given me support through this process," said Mendick. " I couldn't be happier with how things have turned out. Coach Harring has been the best influence on my baseball career and I attribute my hard work and success to him."

Mendick led the team in numerous offensive categories including RBI (30), doubles (16), total bases (71), slugging percentage (.455) and tied for the team lead in hits (50). One of 47 finalists nationally for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award, Mendick took home numerous honors in 2015 including First-Team All-America East, Second-Team NEIBA All-New England and ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-Region.

"It is a culmination of all of Danny's hard work," said UMass Lowell head baseball coach Ken Harring. "He is the best shortstop I have ever coached. The White Sox are getting a great ball player, but more importantly, an even better human being."

Mendick concluded his two-year career with the River Hawks batting .317 in 85 games (315 at-bats) with six home runs and 64 RBI. He totaled 25 doubles, 51 runs, 25 stolen bases and a .407 on-base percentage for the River Hawks, while sporting a .970 fielding percentage at shortstop.
