BALTIMORE, Md. – The UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team was defeated by the UMBC Retrievers in their final conference game of the season, 13-7, Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

"I thought the kids played a really tough, hard-nosed game," said Head Coach Ed Stephenson. "We grabbed an early lead and kept it pretty close throughout, but some unforced turnovers hurt our chances in the end."

The River Hawks (1-11, 0-6) scored the game's opening goal 5:31 into the first when Jon Phillips (Delta, B.C.) scored with the man advantage off a pass from fellow freshman Sean Tyrrell (Calgary, Alberta). After UMBC knotted the game up a minute later, Martin Winter (Lake Oswego, Ore.) put UMass Lowell back in front with his fourth goal of the season halfway through the period. The Retrievers snatched the lead back courtesy of three consecutive goals to end the first quarter.

Keenan Koswin (Winnipeg, Manitoba) brought the River Hawks to within 4-3 with his fifth tally of the season, but the Retrievers scored the final three goals of the period and carried a 7-3 lead into halftime.

The Retrievers' (5-7, 1-4) run continued with the first two goals of the third until Kyle Strong (Groton, Mass) thwarted the momentum at the 4:42 mark with his first goal of the season to make it 9-4. Zack Schwartz (Huntington, N.Y.) scored the only other goal of the period for the River Hawks, who trailed 12-5 after the third.

Strong scored the only two goals for the River Hawks in the fourth to record his first career hat trick. UMass Lowell outscored UMBC 2-1 in the final 15 minutes.

Strong led the River Hawks with three points while Phillips, Schwartz and Nicolas Pino (North Andover, Mass.) each recorded two. Sophomores Giles Ober (Southborough, Mass.), Alex Desmarais (Atkinson, N.H.) and Christopher Litchfield (Burlington, Mass) all saw time in goal for UMass Lowell. Desmarais stopped a team-high seven shots while Ober saved five and Litchfield saved two.

UMass Lowell returns to action on Tuesday, April 21 as they will take on Dartmouth at 7 p.m.
