Matt Bynon Named Volleyball Assistant Coach

LOWELL, Mass.-- UMass Lowell volleyball head coach Resa Provanzano announced Matt Bynon as an assistant coach on Thursday morning.

"We are thrilled to have Matt joining our program," said Provanzano. "He is extremely motivated and has a great deal of passion for the sport. I look forward to watching him develop as a coach and know that our growing program will benefit from having him on the sidelines."

The Rivier University graduate's responsibilities will include primarily working with the passers and defensive players, but will also help with off-court duties and the program's recruiting efforts.

"I am very excited about the opportunity given to me by the UMass Lowell volleyball program," said Bynon. "I am looking forward to build the program from the bottom up and will do whatever it takes to be successful at this level. I feel that with my playing and coaching experience I can bring a lot to the table in all aspects of the game.  It is an exciting time for UMass Lowell athletics as we transition from Division II to Division I and I am proud to be a River Hawk."

Bynon was most recently the director of the Granite Coast Volleyball Club in 2014. He also served as a Recruiting Specialist for the club, as well. In his roles, Bynon would oversee the organization and help the athletes through the recruiting process, while evaluating talent.

Before his time with Granite Coast, the Nashua, N.H. native was a defensive specialist coach at the Spike Mountain Volleyball Camp in Castleton, Vt. He also was a coach of the Lakeside Volleyball Club in Burnt Hills, N.Y. from 2012-2014.

Bynon graduated from Rivier in December 2014, where he was a three-time Great Northeast Athletic Conference Champion and a 2014 All-American. He is the current all-time digs leader at Rivier, as well. Bynon was named Defensive Player of the Year three times. Before Rivier, he attended Sage College of Albany, where he was named the Skyline Rookie of the Year in 2011, while leading the NCAA in digs.
