DULUTH, Minn. -- The No. 7 ranked UMass Lowell Hockey team was defeated by No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth, 2-1, on Friday night in non-conference action in front of 6,164 fans at AMSOIL Arena.
With the loss the River Hawks drop to 3-1-2 overall on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 3-1-2.
"It was a very good hockey game, I thought it was a good road game against a great opponent," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "We had our spurts where we were very good and had other areas where we need to get better, like closing out the second period for example and that was the ultimately the difference in the end."
UMD's Andy Welinski open the scoring in the second period at 6:28 off a shot from the right point as UMass Lowell goalie Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.) was screened by the shot.
Freshman forward Ryan Dmowski (East Lyme, Conn.) evened the game at 1-1 with his first career goal as a River Hawk at 12:38 of the second frame. Dominic Toninato tallied the game-winner for the Bulldogs on the power play with 1:59 left in the middle stanza.
Boyle made 38 saves in the game, including 18 in the second period alone, which marked a new career-high with UMass Lowell. Kasimir Kaskisuo recorded 26 saves in his third win of the season for UMD.
Junior defenseman Dylan Zink (Madison, Wis.) finished the game with a team-high four shots on goal, while senior forward Michael Fallon (Glenview, Ill.) went 7-for-10 in the faceoff circle. UMass Lowell went 0-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill, which marked the first time all season they allowed a power play tally.
The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 31st for the final game of the series at Minnesota-Duluth. Game time at AMSOIL Arena is 8:07 p.m. ET.
