River Hawks Earn Second Straight AE Win Against Vermont, 3-1

LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman Forward Nat Reynisdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) and sophomore forward Thalia Petsis (Toronto, Ontario) both scored their first career goals as the River Hawks defeated Vermont in a 3-1 decision on Thursday night.
Thursday's win was the first time in the Division 1 era that the squad has won back-to-back conference games. The River Hawks improve to 5-10-0 overall, 2-3-0 AE, as Vermont falls to 6-6-2 overall, 3-2-1 AE.
"I think we have been very good early in games," said Head Coach Joel Bancroft. "We knew who we were up against, we spent a lot of time scouting them and the girls stuck to the game plan. Credit to our girls for finding a way to change the complexion of a game that could have gone either way."
The squad put up three goals in 18 minutes, which was enough to seal the deal for the home team.
Reynisdottir gave the home team the 1-0 lead in the 34th minute after netting a loose ball off a Vermont defender. The forward added to the lead putting home a header from Lauren Aldrich (Southampton, Mass.), as the freshman recorded her second tally of the night.
Petsis continued the scoring for UMass Lowell, giving her squad a 3-0 lead in the 41st minute. The forward recorded her first career goal after she lofted a shot over goalkeeper Ally Ramos's head finding the back of the net.
UMass Lowell put up three goals on Vermont's Allie Ramos who owned a 1.41 goals against average coming into tonight's game.
Goalkeeper Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) posted three saves to keep the Catamounts scoreless in the first 45 minutes.
Vermont got themselves on the board in the second half when Sarah Martin's shot was deflected off River Hawk defender Selja Snorradottir's (Reykjavik, Iceland) leg and into the back of the net.
Despite the visitor's 18-13 shot advantage, Schneider was solid in the net tying her career-high nine saves, for the second time this season. Her toughest save came in the 52nd minute when she made a diving stop shutting the Catamount's offense down.
With Thursday's win, the River Hawks now take the lead on the all-time series against Vermont, 2-1. UMass Lowell is back in action Sunday, October 18 as they travel to Long Island to square off against Stony Brook.
