River Hawks add three players to 2014 roster

UMass Lowell adds student-athletes from Russia, Texas and Nevada

LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell Volleyball Head Coach Resa Provanzano has announced the addition of three players to the River Hawks roster for the 2014 season on Friday afternoon.

Libero Malorie McIver (Austin, Texas), outside hitter/middle blocker Masha Yelsukova (St. Petersburg, Russia) and setter Kylee Chun (Las Vegas, Nevada) are the newest additions to the River Hawks roster.

"Our 2014 class is a good representation to the shift in culture that we are trying to create," said Provanzano. "Malorie is a true competitor and there is no doubt that her energy and ball control will help our back court almost immediately.  Masha comes from an area rich in volleyball where she established herself as a presence at the net.  She still has a ton of potential yet to be discovered, but her size and versatility will be a tremendous asset right away.  Lastly, Kylee brings experience and great leadership qualities to the setter position, as well as strong defensive skills.  We are lucky to have them all in River Hawk blue this fall."

McIver attended Vandegrift High School, where she set the school record for most career digs, was named Academic All-District selection all four years, served as team captain and was named the team's Most Valuable Player. She also played club volleyball with the Austin Velocity.

Yelsukova attended Cupertino High School in California, where she broke a number of individual records including: most kills by a sophomore, junior, and senior in a single-season, most career kills in school history and most kills in a single-season. The four-year varsity player also earned numerous awards including: team captain, Team Most Valuable Player, All-Conference, All-State, All-American and First-Team All-League three years in a row. She also played club Volleyball with Encore Volleyball in Redwood City, Calif.

Chun, who joins the squad as a junior, is a transfer from Arizona Western College. She attended Bishop Gorman High School, where she was a four year varsity player. There, she earned a 2008 Sportsmanship Award, was named First-Team All-Conference selection in 2010 and was team Most Valuable Player in 2011. She was also the team captain her senior year.

The River Hawks will begin their second season in Division I on Friday, August 29 at the Bryant Invitational in Smithfield, R.I.
