River Hawks Begin Summer League Play

Thirteen members of the River Hawks baseball team will participate in summer league action
LOWELL, Mass. – Fourteen members who will comprise the 2015 UMass Lowell baseball team will compete in summer league play as the squad looks to build off a successful 2014 campaign.

Nine players will take part in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) while four others join the Valley League, Cape Cod League, Hamptons League, and Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League (ABCCL), respectively.

Outfielder Ian Strom (Hopedale, Mass.) and first baseman Matt Mottola (Newburyport, Mass.) have already earned Player of the Day honors in the FCBL. Strom went 3-5 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI leading his team to a 15-5 victory while Mottola went 2-for-4, driving in 4 and scoring two runs.

Mottola, Matt Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.), and Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.) rejoin the Nashua Silver Knights, last years FCBL runner-up.

Sanchez earned himself a spot in last years All-Star game following a strong regular season when he hit .289 with a home run, 26 RBI, and 17 stolen bases in 51 appearances.

The River Hawks had an impressive first season in Division I and in the America East Conference. Picked to finish last in the AE preseason poll, the team turned heads totaling a 20-22 overall record, with a 10-10 mark in conference play, placing them third in the standings.
