Morais nets third goal in four games; River Hawks host Bryant Thursday in home opener
BUFFALO, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2013) – Freshman M Eric Martin (Danvers, Mass.) scored two goals to lead UMass Lowell to its first-ever NCAA Division I victory – a 3-1 win at Canisius College – Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.
With the win, UMass Lowell improved to 1-3 and hosts Bryant University Thursday in its home opener (7:00). Canisius slipped to 1-2 and visits the University of Buffalo Wednesday (7:00).
Junior F Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) scored his third goal of the season and assisted on another.
"I think essentially we were tighter. We did a much better job not allowing a lot of time defensively in the midfield," said Head Coach Christian Figueroa. "We did a good job combining and finding each other better than we had in the past couple of games."
The River Hawks opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Morais picked up a loose ball 10 yards inside the half and threaded a pass to Martin on a break, who tucked past junior GK Reiner Dollak at the far post.
UMass Lowell was awarded a penalty kick in the 39th minute when senior M Daniel Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) broke from a defender inside the box and was tripped from behind. Morais slotted inside the left post from the spot.
Martin completed the double and gave the River Hawks a 3-0 cushion in the 74th minute when he headed home a corner kick from sophomore B Carlos Ruiz (East Boston, Mass.) at the far post.
A minute later, Canisius pulled a goal back. Sophomore M Nicolo Baudo weaved his way along the endline around a defender and tucked a shot inside the far post.
Canisius outshot UMass Lowell 26-11 overall and 15-6 on frame. Senior G Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) had 12 saves while Dollak stopped three shots.
