Fernandes, Morais strike for River Hawks
LOWELL (Sept. 12, 2013) ā Sophomore F Brett Larocque scored one goal and set up the decisive goal as Bryant University defeated UMass Lowell, 3-2, Thursday night in a non-conference men's soccer clash at Cushing Field.
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 1-4-0 overall and visits Central Connecticut State Wednesday at 7:00. Bryant improved to 2-3 and hosts Rider Sunday at 1:00.
UMass Lowell got goals from junior Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.), his fourth of the season, and freshman Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde), who made his debut following a redshirt 2012-13 season and UMass Lowell's first four matches this year due to an injury.
Larocque set up the winner when UMass Lowell was whistled for a foul with 30 seconds remaining in the match on the top left side of the box. Larocque sent the free kick on the ground to junior B Shane Murphy, who redirected inside the right post.
Bryant jumped out to a 2-0 lead and scored its first goal in the 25th minute when Larocque headed home at the six-yard box off a long throw-in from freshman B Chris McCormick.
The Bulldogs doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when junior M Lucas Guerriero intercepted an errant pass inside the UMass Lowell half, meandered to the top of the box and uncorked a blast inside the left post.
Despite going 0-2 down, UMass Lowell combined well on several occasions in the first half and nearly went ahead in the 20th minute. Senior M Kevin Zapata (Medellin, Colombia) fed a long ball from the left side to Morais, who headed into the path of senior F Daniel Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.). Galvin settled, turned but was unable to get a solid foot on it.
The River Hawks cut the lead in half with 30 seconds left in the half when Fernandes headed home a Zapata free kick at the left post.
Both teams had chances in the second half, but it was UMass Lowell who leveled in the 78th minute. Galvin and a defender battled on a breakaway, with the defender errantly crossing into the path of Morais, who side-footed home from the six.
UMass Lowell outshot Bryant 16-10 overall and 7-4 on target. Senior GK Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.) had one save while sophomore Chris Knaub stopped five shots.
