SOUTH KENT CONN. (Sept. 24, 2013) – Junior
Harry Hulme (Manchester, England) shot an 80 for the first round but improved with a 73 and a 77 en route to a 230 to lead the UMass Lowell golf team to 17
th place at the Hartford Hawk Invitational Monday and Tuesday at the Bull's Bridge Golf Club.
Rutgers University won the team title with a three-round 868 to edge the host Hawks, who finished with an 877. Connecticut (890), Loyola (Md.) (896) and Temple (898) rounded out the top five.
UMass Lowell shot a collective 968, struggling to a 326 and a 319 for Monday's rounds and a 323 on Tuesday. The River Hawks trailed Iona (958) by 10 strokes.
The Tournament drew 96 players representing 17 teams.
Hulme emerged UMass Lowell's leader for the second time in as many tournaments and placed in a tie for 34
th, highlighting with his second-round one-over-par 73.
Freshman
Jonathan Burgin (Hampshire, England) placed in a tie for 66
th as he shot a 78-79-81—238 while freshman
Joe Vanaman (Nottingham, England) shot rounds of 86-81-81—248 to place tied for 87
th.
Senior
Justin Barbera (Milton, Mass.) shot an 82-86-84—252 to place tied for 90
th while junior
John Ryan (Westford, Mass.) shot an 87-87-86—260 to place 96
th.
Evan Russell of Hartford earned medalist honors as he carded rounds of 74-63-70—207 to edge Doug Walters of Hartford (72-68-72—212) and Brandon Matthews of Temple (74-71-67—212).
UMass Lowell enters the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Friday and Saturday in Egg Harbor Township, N.J.
