Matthew Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) blasted a two-run homer in the second inning to give UMass Lowell a 2-0 lead, but the lead was short-lived as Adelphi rallied to an 13-8 victory in Boca Raton, Fla. on Thursday afternoon.
The loss brought UMass Lowell to 10-5 overall. The River Hawks will play twice tomorrow against American International College (12:30) and Hillsdale College (3:00) in Lantana, Fla.
Adelphi improved to 4-5-1 on the season.
Senior
Tyler Toyfair (Agawam, Mass.) got the start for the River Hawks and cruised through the first two innings. However, in the third inning Toyfair allowed two walks and three singles as Adelphi tied the game 2-2.
Toyfair was back on the hill to begin the fourth, but would not make it out of the inning.
Four River Hawk errors, coupled with four Panther hits allowed six men to score in the frame, giving Adelphi an 8-2 lead.
Toyfair pitched two and two thirds innings for UMass Lowell, allowing two earned runs on three hits and three walks. He also notched four strikeouts in the no-decision.
UMass Lowell would battle back in the home half of the fourth. Sophomore
Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.) plated two runs with a double to left and an error by Adelphi's shortstop plated two more, closing the gap to 8-6.
Ricoy finished the afternoon with three hits and a walk.
Still, Adelphi continued to swing the bats in the fifth inning, plating three more runs on three hits to extend its lead to 11-6.
Senior
Greg Leger (Bridgewater, Mass.) took the loss for UMass Lowell. The righty tossed an inning and a third and allowed six runs (two earned) on four hits.
Adelphi's Jonathan Mulford gained the win. Mulford went three and a third innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks. He also notched two strikeouts.
