River Hawks Reveal 2026 Team Captains

12/8/2025 1:23:00 PM

LOWELL, Mass. — UMass Lowell Baseball Head Coach Nick Barese has announced the River Hawks' captains for the 2026 season.

Seniors Brian Foley (Milton, Mass.) and Joseph DeLanzo (Nutley, N.J.) have grown as leaders throughout their time at UMass Lowell, and have been selected to step into the captain's positions for the upcoming campaign.

"There is no higher honor in our program than being named a team captain and today we're fortunate to announce two student-athletes to lead our program who exemplify the standards of River Hawk baseball," said Barese. "Joe has been an instant impact to our program beginning last year when he joined us as a transfer. It's extraordinarily rare for someone from another program to transfer in and have an immediate positive influence and earn respect on the field and in the locker room, and that's exactly what Joe has done. Brian, who has been with us for all four years, is a tremendous leader, selfless teammate, and is the exact model of what we want as a player in our program in terms of development beginning their freshman year. Both Joe and Brian are the perfect River Hawks, and I'm totally confident they will lead our group to new heights."

Foley is heading into his fourth year at UMass Lowell, having served as a reliable relief pitcher for the River Hawks thus far. On the mound, the right-handed pitcher has registered 60 strikeouts and three saves over 66.1 innings pitched in his collegiate career. He has totaled 55 appearances as a River Hawk, owning a 4-5 record, including a 3-0 mark in 2025 with 22 strikeouts, 19 batters walked and one save through 25.1 innings pitched. Foley is currently pursuing his undergraduate degree in business administration from the Manning School of Business.

DeLanzo transferred to UMass Lowell during his junior year and bought into the culture right away. Despite having missed more than half of the 2025 season, DeLanzo finished sixth on the team with 20 RBI. At the plate last season, the New Jersey native posted a .253 batting average and a .687 on-base percentage in 87 at bats with 22 hits, 8 runs, and six doubles. A key piece to the middle infield, DeLanzo totaled 39 putouts, 51 assists and 14 double plays with a fielding percentage of .978 this past season. DeLanzo is currently pursuing his undergraduate degree in health studies from the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and in psychology from the Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences.
