Junior Melissa Effertz (Oceanside, Calif.) scored a goal and an assist to lead UMass Lowell field hockey over Assumption College on Saturday afternoon in Worcester, MA.

“We are happy with the result, but there is still a lot of work to be done for this season to be successful,” said head coach Shannon Hlebichuk. “Our team struggles with focus and will need to bring a stronger effort in the future. Field hockey is a game of two halves and we need our players to commit to competing for a full 70 minutes.”

The River Hawks (7-1, 2-0 Northeast-10) have now won six in a row and will return home to host Saint Anselm on Wednesday at 7 PM. Assumption (4-5-1, 3-1 NE-10) hits the road to face Merrimack on Wednesday at 7 PM.

The Greyhounds caught UMass Lowell by surprise to start the game, scoring just 1:15 into play. Maria Beatrice (West Yarmouth, Mass.) picked up the ball out in front and beat goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) one-on-one, slotting the ball in the low left corner.

The River Hawks countered in the 11th minute with sophomore Bianca Jones' (Watertown, Mass.) third goal of the season. Senior Emily Painten (Walpole, Mass.) found Jones through a scramble and she scored into the left corner.

UMass Lowell then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 13th minute, scoring on a corner. Jones sent the ball in and Painten found senior Sarah Wilcox (Old Town, Maine) for a blast into the right side.

The game remained close through the first half before the River Hawks put some distance on the scoreboard in opening minute of the second half. Effertz finished a corner, scoring on the right side after a pass from Jones.

Then, in the 38th minute, UMass Lowell scored the game's final goal on yet another corner. Jones sent the ball in to Effertz, who ripped a shot to the net that was tipped in by senior Vanessa Kent (Charlton, Mass.).

For the match, the River Hawks outshot Assumption 26-3 and out-cornered the Greyhounds 18-0. It is the first time this season UMass Lowell has held an opponent without a corner.

Goalkeepers Hopkins (7-1) and Bryanna Bourbeau (Litchfield, N.H.) both saw time in net. Hopkins made one save and allowed the lone Greyhound tally through 62 minutes, while Bourbeau saw no action over the final eight.
