LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman Ryan Proctor (Uxbridge, Ontario) recorded a multi-goal game for the first time in his career, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (2-7, 0-3 AE) fell to the UMBC Retrievers (3-6, 2-2 AE), 18-4, on Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field.
Proctor, who scored two goals, was one of four River Hawks to record a point in the contest. Sophomore Griffin Sumwalt (Aquebogue, N.Y.) also added two goals and a ground ball, while sophomore Danny Burke (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and junior Jayden Consigli (Franklin, Mass.) each added an assist. In net, sophomore AJ True (Manchester, N.H.) made seven saves in the first half, while junior Scott Kosakowski (Westport, Ct.) tallied five saves in the second half.
Despite the Retrievers scoring the first goal of the game, the River Hawks answered with haste, as Burke found Proctor with 12:07 clock, setting up the freshman with an easy opportunity to even the score. Both sides proceeded to lock in defensively, as the game remained in a 1-1 tie for nearly eight minutes, before the Retrievers added a pair of goals to take a 3-1 advantage. Proctor struck again, though, scoring with five seconds remaining in the first quarter to pull his squad within one.
In the second, UMBC hit its stride offensively, scoring eight in a row to take an 11-2 lead with 3:56 left in the half. Moments later, with the score the same, Sumwalt capitalized on his next opportunity, lacing a shot into the back of the net to make it 11-3. The Retrievers retaliated, scoring twice to make it a 13-3 game heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the River Hawks' defense locked in, preventing the Retrievers from scoring a goal while only allowing four shots over 12 minutes of action. Meanwhile, the offense started to find its footing, firing off nearly a dozen shots over the same period of time. UMBC, however, struck with 2:32 on the clock, but UMass Lowell countered just over a minute when Consigli dished a pass out to Sumwalt, who tallied his second goal of the game, cutting the deficit to 14-4 heading into the fourth.
In the final quarter, the River Hawks looked to battle, allowing only one goal in the first seven minutes, but the opposition added three more in the final minutes, sealing the 18-4 decision.
Next up, the River Hawks head to New Jersey to take on the NJIT Highlanders on Saturday, April 11. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium in Newark, N.J.
