River Hawks Participate in Read Across America

LOWELL, Mass. - In celebration of Read Across America, eight student-athletes from UMass Lowell proudly participated in efforts to promote literacy and a love of reading within the community. As part of the nationwide initiative held annually in March, the student-athletes spent a week visiting local schools, including McAuliffe Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School and Lowell Community Charter Public School.

"I always enjoy doing Read Across America in the Lowell Schools because it gives me a chance to immerse myself in the community," said men's cross country/track & field team member Willem Eisl. "Lowell has given me so many opportunities, so it is amazing to be able to give back."

As they promoted the importance of literacy and reading, the student-athletes also inspired the children to dream big and expand their knowledge.

"Simply, Read Across America is my favorite week of the year," said Academic and Student-Athlete Development Advisor Mason Ayotte. "The opportunity to go out into the local community with our student-athletes and see the kids so excited to hear from River Hawks is always a great experience. I cannot thank our student-athletes enough for their time and effort throughout these events."

The annual initiative was once again a success, not only for the local students who were inspired to read, but for the River Hawks who gained valuable experience in community engagement and the satisfaction of giving back.

"I love the idea that I can be the person that a kid thinks, 'yeah I want to be like him!' The idea that I can be a person to look up to for all the kids is really special and that is really what drives me in wanting to do this every year," concluded Eisl.
