River Hawks Use Second Half Explosion To Beat Wagner, 16-7

LOWELL, Mass. – Junior Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) set a new career-high with five goals, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (2-1) dominated in the second half to earn a 16-7 victory over the Wagner Seahawks (0-4) on Saturday afternoon.
"Really good win," said Head Coach Drew Kelleher. "I think our guys were ready for one, and we finally played a full game. A lot of people deserve credit, but a special shoutout to our facility folks, that field looked like a brand new turf. We're really thankful for all their hard work."
Frigon, who collected two ground balls as well, was one of 12 River Hawks to record a point in the battle. Also recording five points, junior Johnny Soi (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) and sophomore Griffin Sumwalt (Aquebogue, N.Y.) both totaled three goals and two assists, while sophomore Alex Lafreniere (Chelmsford, Mass.) turned in a multi-point game with a goal and an assist. Meanwhile, juniors Jackson Schlicker (Portland, Ore.) and Nolan Marshall (Oakville, Ontario), sophomore Danny Burke (Eden Prairie, Minn.), and freshman Ryan Proctor (Uxbridge, Ontario) all scored once. In net, junior Carter O'Brien (Concord, Mass.) made 10 saves and allowed only seven goals in the start.
The River Hawks wasted no time on offense, as Soi ripped a shot past the opposing keeper just over two minutes in, putting his team in front early. Seconds later, after junior Justin Alexander (Franklin, Mass.) won the faceoff, he dished out a pass to Marshall, who immediately fired his shot into the back of the net to make it a 2-0 game with less than three minutes in. The Seahawks proceed to lock down defensively, not allowing another goal for over 12 minutes, while adding two of their own to even the score. However, with 20 seconds on the clock, Sumwalt struck, putting his squad back on top, 3-2, heading into the second quarter.
The second proved to be a back-and-forth battle, with Wagner scoring the first goal of the period with just over 11 minutes on the clock, before Schlicker forced a turnover, grabbed the ground ball, and raced down the field for his first goal of the season. Moments later, the visitors responded, evening the score up at 4-4, but in the final minutes, Frigon tallied his first score of the game, giving UMass Lowell a 5-4 lead at the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Seahawks started the period strong, scoring two of the first three goals, interrupted by Frigon's second tally of the game. UMass Lowell, though, caught fire on both ends of the field, not allowing Wagner to score for the remainder of the third. Meanwhile, the offense couldn't be stopped, as the River Hawks scored six times in under six minutes, highlighted by two goals from Frigon, while Soi, Lafreniere, Sumwalt, and Burke all added one, giving the hosts a 12-6 lead through three.
In the final quarter, UMass Lowell continued to light up the scoreboard, adding four more goals from Soi, Proctor, Sumwalt, and Frigon, while allowing only one, sealing the 16-7 victory.
Next, the River Hawks face a quick turnaround when they host the Holy Cross Crusaders on Tuesday, February 24. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Cushing Field.
