OMAHA, NE – The UMass Lowell baseball team (3-8) fell to the Creighton Bluejays (8-1) 12-2 on Tuesday night at the Charles Schwab Field.
Graduate student
Ryan Proto (Centerville, Mass.) went 2-3 with a double and one run. Sophomore
Carlos Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico) tallied one hit and one run while senior
Roddy Hernandez (Jersey City, N.J.) had a double. Senior
Fritz Genther (Kingston, N.Y.) tallied one RBI.
Sophomore
Brendan Holland (Andover, Mass.) went 3.0 innings and struck out one. Graduate students
Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) and
Jack Sefrino (Dartmouth, Mass.) went 1.0 and 0.2 innings, respectively, and each struck out one.
Ryan Proto and
Carlos Martinez drew walks with two outs and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch.
Brandon Fish walked to load bases before
Fritz Genther was walked to put UMass Lowell ahead. A wild pitch scored Proto and moved Genther and Fish to second and third, but both were left stranded.
A leadoff walk and double on the next at bat scored one run for the Bluejays. Jette got out of the inning with the 2-1 lead. Creighton took the lead in the bottom of the second with four runs on four hits. The hosts tacked on two in the third to take a 7-2 lead.
Brendan Holland took over for the fourth inning and threw back-to-back scoreless frames with one strikeout.

Carlos Martinez all had hits in those two innings, but the River Hawks could not cut into the lead.
Roddy Hernandez hit a two-out double in the top of the sixth before
Trey Brown singled up the middle to put runners on the corners, but both were left stranded. Creighton tacked on one more in the sixth, pushing the lead to six.
The hosts added four in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win. Game two is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
