River Hawks Fall to No. 4 Gonzaga, 113-54

SPOKANE, Wash. – Fifth year Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) scored a team-best 10 points, as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (2-1) fell to the #4 Gonzaga Bulldogs (3-0), 113-54, on Friday night.
"I think that is, if not the best team in the country, one of the best teams in the country," said head coach Pat Duquette. "I coached at the high major level for 13 years in the ACC and the Big East and I haven't seen many teams that big with that much depth and that many weapons. On their home court, I believe they're one of the best teams, if not the best team in the country."
Mincey, who added four rebounds and two assists, has reached double digits in all three games this year. Right behind him, fifth year Max Brooks (Waldorf, Md.) added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds, while senior Cam Morris III(Alexander City, Ala.) and freshman Martin Somerville (Bowie, Md.) each chipped in with nine points, as well.
Gonzaga opened the game with five points in just over a minute of play, but it did not take long for the River Hawks to respond, as Mincey hit a contested jumper to get his squad on the board. The Bulldogs answered back to extend the lead to 10-2, and despite five straight points for Morris III, including a triple, the hosts added 11 more to make it 21-7 with 11:22 on the clock.
Moments later, with the score 24-8, the River Hawks began to find their footing on offense, using hard-fought layups from Brooks and fifth year Yuri Covington (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) to cut the deficit to 24-12. Although Gonzaga used a 14-3 run to extend the lead to 38-15, UMass Lowell continued to battle, outscoring the Bulldogs 12-11 in the final four minutes, featuring four points from senior Quincy Clark (Columbus, Ohio), to make it 49-27 at the break.
Coming out of the half, the Bulldogs used a quick, 8-2 spurt to add to their lead with 18:55 to play. The River Hawks, though, fired right back, using four points from Mincey and a deep trey from Covington to make it 60-36 two minutes later. Gonzaga responded, scoring 15 straight before Mincey sank a fast-break layup, ending the run midway through the second period.
Despite a 24-2 run extending the lead to 99-40 for the home team with just under six minutes remaining, the River Hawks continue to show their fight, stringing together an 8-3 run, fueled by three jumpers from Somerville. Gonzaga, however, locked down on defense for the remainder of the night, sealing the 113-54 final score.
Next up, the River Hawks wrap up their trip out west when they head to Seattle to take on the University of Washington on Sunday, November 17. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 10:30 p.m.
