River Hawks Suffer 2-1 Setback Against Bryant

LOWELL, Mass. – Junior Oliver Holmstrom (Gävle, Sweden) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (6-2-4, 1-1-1 AE) fell to the Bryant Bulldogs (7-3-2, 2-1-0 AE), 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field.
"I thought we played well for a lot of the game," said head coach Kyle Zenoni. "We had two big errors for us to give away a PK and then in transition, I think we had a guy scoot inside on us. Those two main errors kind of killed the game for us, but the thing is you aren't going to win every game in conference, and we know that. So, we have to pick ourselves up and go from there. I thought for the majority of the part we were better than them, so that was good."
Assisting on Holmstrom's goal was junior Oscar Perez (Sagunto, Spain), who now has three points on the season thanks to the assist and a goal earlier in the year. Leading the River Hawks with four shots was senior Yanis Lakhlifi (La Crau, France), while five tallied a shot on target on the afternoon. In net, junior JR Gawel (Leonardtown, Md.) made four saves.
Both sides opened the game with excellent defensive play, with three corner kicks combined being the only offensive highlight in the first 20 minutes. Although Bryant tallied the first shots of the game in the 27thand 29th minute, the River Hawks were first to record one on net when senior Liam Ireland (Yarmouth, Maine) laced one towards the top right of the net, but a save by the visitors' keeper kept the game scoreless with just under 15 minutes remaining in the half.
Continuing to pressure the Bryant defense, the River Hawks kept the ball in the offensive zone, looking for an opportunity to capitalize. With 34:02 on the clock, graduate student Guillermo Francés Poquet (Enguera, Valencia) made a few moves to get past his defender, before ripping a shot towards the net from the back right corner of the field, but the Bulldogs keeper used a diving effort to get his fingers on it, keeping things scoreless. The back-and-forth battle continued in the final minutes of the first, with neither side logging another shot, leaving the game scoreless at the break.
Coming out of the half, UMass Lowell found its stride on offense, totaling two shots in just over five minutes. Staying relentless, their efforts paid off in the 54th minute, when Perez sent a pass to Holmstrom from near midfield to just outside the box. Holmstrom quickly settled the ball with his back to the goal, before turning and burying a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to put his team in front 1-0.
Holding the lead, the River Hawks continued their physical play as they attempted to maintain the shutout. A strong showing by the defense held the opposition to only one shot for over 20 minutes, but in the 77th minute, a foul in the box gave Bryant a penalty kick, which they buried to even the score. Three minutes later, the Bulldogs added a second to take the 2-1 lead. In the final ten minutes, UMass Lowell looked for an equalizer with shots from Lakhlifi, Ireland, and Perez, but couldn't find the back of the net, sealing the 2-1 decision.
Next up, the River Hawks will go on the road when they head to New York to take on the Binghamton Bearcats on Saturday, October 19. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
