DURHAM, N.H. – Six different River Hawks recorded at least one shot, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer (5-6-3, 1-4-1 AE) fell to the New Hampshire Wildcats (7-5-3, 2-3-1 AE), 2-0, in the final road match of the regular season.
Leading the way for the UMass Lowell offense, junior Santiago Somorrostro (Nashua, N.H.) finished the match with two shots, both on target. Tied with two shots, senior Linus Musielak (Dortmund, Germany) added one on goal, while junior Justin Godbout-Garon (Québec City, Quebec) and sophomore Juan Pablo-Correa (Wakefield, Mass.) each add one shot on net. In net, sophomore Alvaro Medrano (Guatemala City, Guatemala) made a pair of saves in his third start of the season.
The River Hawks' offense got off to a strong start, as Somorrostro logged the first shot of the match just over five minutes in, but the opposing keeper was quick on his feet and got in front of it to keep the visitors off the board. Although the Wildcats countered with a shot moments later, the ball never reached the net. UMass Lowell continued to put the pressure on the New Hampshire defense, adding three more shots, with one on target, over the next 15 minutes.
In the 20th minute, the UMass Lowell defense was challenged but stood strong. As the hosts raced down the left side of the pitch, Medrano dropped his body in front of the ball, and although the ball deflected towards the net, junior Jonah Straube (Frankfurt, Germany) jumped in front of the loose ball and kicked it out of play, saving a goal. Both sides continued the strong defensive effort through the remainder of the half, with sophomore Juan Pablo-Correa (Wakefield, Mass.) logging the lone shot, but an excellent sliding kick save in the 45th minute by Medrano in a one-on-one kept the game scoreless heading into the break.
Coming out of halftime, New Hampshire struck quickly, capitalizing on a free kick in the corner to take a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute. Conintuing to apply pressure, the Wildcats fired off four of the next five shots, but a pair of saves by Medrano, including an unbelievable diving save in the 67th minute, kept it a one-goal game. The hosts, though, found the back of the net in the 70th minute to make it a 2-0 game.
In the final 20 minutes, the River Hawks looked to get on the board, as Godbout-Garon and Musielak each fired shots on target, but a pair of saves by the opposing keeper sealing the 2-0 decision.
Next up, the River Hawks conclude the regular season on Tuesday, November 3, when they play host to the #23 Vermont Catamounts. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Cushing Field.
