LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (17-30, 9-12 AE) fell to the Hofstra Pride (25-24, 13-13 CAA) 20-4 in game two of the weekend series.
Senior
Trey Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) led the team with three hits and added two RBIs, one run and drew one walk. Sophomore
Jacob Humphrey (Standish, Maine) and senior
Frank Wayman (Horseheads, N.Y.) each tallied two hits. Five other River Hawks recorded one hit each on the afternoon.
Graduate student
Joshua Becker (Burlington, Mass.) fell to 4-3 on the year after throwing 2.0 innings with just one strikeout. Sophomore
Drew Haight (Duxbury, Mass.) and graduate student
Zach Rodgers (Parrish, Fla.) threw the only two scoreless frames for the UMass Lowell pitching staff. Haight struck out one while Rodgers threw just six pitches in a 1-2-3 inning.
The visitors picked up where they left off Friday night and were aggressive in their at bats. Hofstra plated three runs in the first and tacked on five more in the next two innings to take a commanding 8-0 lead midway through three. The River Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the third as sophomore
Conor Kelly (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored as Humphrey reached on a fielder's choice. The Pride tacked on two more in the fourth before a sacrifice fly from Kelly scored Brown for the River Hawks' second run.
The defensive struggles were clear in Saturday's contest as Hofstra piled on eight more runs through the six inning and the River Hawks defensive mistakes continued to pile on. Freshman Robert Geisler (Bayonne, N.J.) and sophomore
Brandon Fish (Londonderry, N.H.) hit back-to-back two-out base hits to put runners on for UMass Lowell.
Trey Brown followed with a double to deep center field that scored both runners to cut the lead.
Hofstra would score two more runs in the eighth to bring their game total to 20 runs on 21 hits. The River Hawks were charged with seven errors in Saturday's game, with throwing errors continuing to hurt the hosts. The Pride took advantage and made the River Hawks pay and cruised to a big win in game two.
The series wraps up on Sunday, May 14 at LeLacheur Park, with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
