"With the wind blowing out, we knew it would be back and forth," said head coach Ken Harring. "In the end, they had bigger hits than we did. We will regroup and have a chance to finish our last four weekends at home."
Â
Senior Matt Tobin (Poland, N.Y.) had a great day at the plate with two hits, five RBIs, one run and one walk in three at bats. Senior Ryan Proto (Centerville, Mass.) tallied two hits and three runs with one RBI and one walk. Four other River Hawks tallied a hit in the loss.
Â
Freshman Nick DiRito (Plymouth, Mass.) got the start and went 2.1 innings with one strikeout. Fellow freshman Michael Simes (Rutland, Mass.) fell to 1-2 on the season after 2.1 innings. Simes struck out two and allowed two walks and two earned runs.
Â
Sophomore Jacob Humphrey (Standish, Maine) hit a leadoff single and would come in to score on junior Fritz Genther's (Kingston, N.Y.) two-out RBI single down the left field line, putting UMass Lowell in front early. Sophomore Alex Luccini (Hopedale, Mass.) singled up the middle to move Genther to third before the junior stole home to double the lead. Luke Trythall answered with a three-run blast to put the hosts in front. An RBI double added a fourth to give UMBC a 4-2 edge after one.
Â
Ryan Proto's leadoff homerun in the second brought UMass Lowell back within one run. DiRito settled down and threw a 1-2-3 second frame. The Retrievers tacked on two in the third and Freshman Jacob Jette (Franklin, Mass.) came in to close the inning.
Â
Three straight walks in the top of the fourth loaded the bases before Matt Tobin blasted a grand slam to left field to put the River Hawks in front 7-6. UMBC made a pitching change and retired the next three hitters, but UMass Lowell jumped in front. A two-out RBI single scored two in the bottom half of the inning to put UMBC back in the lead.
Â
Matt Ryan hit a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the fifth to give the hosts a two-run edge. Matt Tobin brought in another run in the sixth with a single to center to make it a 9-8 game. Senior Trey Brown's (Rochester, N.Y.) two-out single allowed Alex Luccini to score on a throwing error, tying the game. A two-run homerun in the bottom half put UMBC ahead 11-9.
Â
Leewood Molessa's solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth extended the lead to three runs late in the game. UMass Lowell could not find a way back in the game and fell in the series finale.
Â
The River Hawks return to action on Wednesday, April 26 with a visit to Boston College.
