River Hawks Upended by Bryant, 20-4

LOWELL, Mass.—Wet and rainy conditions prevailed as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-7, 0-2 America East) faced a tough 20-4 loss at the hands of Bryant (6-2, 2-0 AE) on Saturday night at Cushing Field.
Four different River Hawks struck twine in the tilt. Junior Jake Davis (Franklin, Mass.), sophomore Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.), junior Curtis Redd (Amherst, N.H.) and graduate student Dakota Clark (Bedford, N.H.) each put up a goal to end their night with one point apiece. With his first quarter strike, Lawhorn extended his active goal streak to eight straight. Sophomore Khairi Sears (Columbus, Ohio) and graduate student Sean Parker (Flemington, N.J.) capped the points for the River Hawks with one helper each.
Facing the lion's share of the action, freshman Luke Renaud (Skaneateles, N.Y.) suffered the loss after making 17 saves in his 45 minutes of play.
A steady start kept both teams chasing first blood for the first three minutes of play until a shot from Bryant's Johnny Hackett pushed the visitors out in front. The River Hawks had the response lined up, however, as Lawhorn leveled the score with a quick shot off the look from Sears. The Bulldogs surged back to close the quarter, netting four unanswered to cap the opening 15 minutes with a 5-1 advantage.
Bryant kept the momentum in their favor for the better part of the second, tacking on another five straight to extend their lead to 10-1 with 7:37 on the clock. Clark momentarily halted Bryant's pace with his third of the season at 5:17, but Bryant potted a rebuttal shot just moments after. One final goal from Davis with just over a minute left in the half sent the River Hawks to the half chasing an 11-3 deficit.
Redd kept the offensive alive with a goal in the third period, but Bryant offset his tally with a flurry of seven more goals to head into the final quarter up, 18-4.
The fourth marked a major change of pace as both sides ramped up the defense. Despite a few good looks from the River Hawks in the final frame, the Bulldogs came out on top with the 20-4 decision.
The River Hawks close out their two-game homestand next Saturday, April 1, at 11 a.m. with a visit from Binghamton.
