NEW ORLEANS, LA – The UMass Lowell baseball team (0-1, 0-0 AE) fell 10-2 to the Tulane Green Wave (1-0, 0-0 AAC) in the season opener.
Senior
Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.) picked up his first steal of the season after a leadoff walk in the first inning. Senior
Gerry Siracusa (Kinnelon, N.J.) got UMass Lowell going early with a base hit drove Gallagher in as the River Hawks took a 1-0 lead.
Joshua Becker recorded his first strikeout of the year in the second inning, getting out of the frame with a 1-2-3 inning.
The Green Wave bats got going in the third as Tulane jumped in front 3-1. Freshman
Brandon Fish's (Londonderry, N.H.) first career hit came with a triple in the top of the fourth, but at the next at bat, the rookie was thrown out at home to end the inning.
UMass Lowell responded in the fifth inning junior
Trey Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) hit a single into right field with juniors
Frank Wayman (Horseheads, N.Y.) and
Cedric Rose (Pittsfield, Mass.) on the corners. Wayman came in to score to cut the lead to 4-2. Sophomore
Michael Quigley (Halifax, Mass.) came in to close the inning, but the Tulane bats found a rhythm and extended the lead to 6-2. After a 1-2-3 inning for UMass Lowell, the Green Wave scored three more runs for a 9-2 advantage. Tulane added one more run in the bottom of the eighth to win 10-2.
