AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Lowell men's basketball team will finish off its three-game road trip in Amherst to take on in-state rival Massachusetts for their annual Kennedy Cup clash.
KENNEDY CUP
The Kennedy Cup was established in the fall of 2018 and is awarded annually to the university with the most wins in the cumulative season series between teams from UMass Lowell and UMass Amherst. With an 8-6 advantage across all sports, the River Hawks won the inaugural challenge. The Minutemen earned a 10-8 decision last year in 2021-22. The seris is currently tied, 3-3-2, in 2022-23. John Kennedy, a longtime supporter of both athletic programs, holds degrees from both institutions, Lowell Technological Institute ('70) and UMass Amherst ('76), with degrees in Mathematics (BS) and Accounting (MS), respectively.
A WIN WOULD
A win against the Minutemen would improve UMass Lowell's record to 10-1, continuing the program's best start since 2002-03. A win would also extend the team's current win streak to eight games, marking the program's longest win streak since the 2008-09 season when the team won 13 in a row.
LEADING THE FLOCK
Three River Hawks are averaging double-digit scoring, as Abdoul Karim Coulibaly leads the way with 14.5 points per game, in addition to adding a team-best 9.6 rebounds per game. Right behind him, Everette Hammond is averaging 12.9 points, while shooting 49% from the field. Max Brooks adds 10.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, and paces the team with 19 blocks. Ayinde Hikim has been the primary playmaker so far with 42 assists on the year.
LAST TIME OUT
Yuri Covington posted a game-high 22 points on a personal best six three-pointers made, as the River Hawks took down LIU, 84-64. Right behind Covington in scoring was Everette Hammond who tallied 18. Both teams traded shots early, but it was UMass Lowell that was first to break away when Hammond tallied six straight points to take a 26-16 lead. Back-to-back threes from Covington would extend the lead, but the Sharks would battle back to make it a 14-point game at half. The River Hawk offense continued to roll in the second half, and after a three from Quinton Mincey capped off a 20-6 run, the UMass Lowell lead became too large for the Sharks to battle back from.
GOING STREAKING
By securing the victory against LIU, the River Hawks have now won seven straight, setting a new DI program record. The last time the River Hawks held a win streak of this length was during the 2011-12 season when the squad also won seven straight. The River Hawks are also 5-0 at home, which is a program best at Division I since posting the same home start in 2018-19.
TWO-WAY PLAY
The River Hawks are proving to be more balanced than ever before, leading the America East on both ends of the floor in field goal percentage and field goal percentage defense.
RIM PROTECTION
The River Hawks are ranked third in the nation for rebounds per game right now. Abdoul Karim Coulibaly ranks 12th in the country individually in offensive rebounds per game (3.75).
STEALING THE SHOW
The River Hawks have done a good job disrupting the opposition so far this year, averaging a DI program-best 8.6 steals per game. Connor Withers leads the team with 15 takeaways, including three in the win against Merrimack on Nov. 30.
SHARING IS CARING
Coach Duquette has said this is his deepest and most talented team yet. The River Hawks have boasted at least eight scorers in each of their first ten games, including 11 against Emerson. In the contests against Fisher and Emerson, the team totaled six, double-digit scorers for the first time since 2017-18 (at Maine, 1/31/18). At least four River Hawks have scored in double figures in five of the ten games.
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Defense has been a huge point of emphasis for the program again this year. The team leads the America East in blocks per game and rebounding margin.
SHARP SHOOTERS
The River Hawks, who shot a season-high 63.5% from the field in the win against Emerson, have outshot their opponents in every game this year. The team surpassed 50% shooting in seven out of ten games so far, as well. The team is averaging 50.9% from the field to rank ninth in the nation.

In each of their first ten games, the River Hawks have outscored their opponents in the second half, including posting a 59-18 advantage against Fisher in the season opener.
