DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomores
Andre Lee (Karlstad, Sweden) and
Carl Berglund (Hammaro, Sweden) totaled three points apiece, as the No. 20 UMass Lowell hockey team (3-5-0) faltered late in a 7-6 overtime heartbreaker at New Hampshire (5-10-2) on Saturday evening.
The River Hawks led by as many as three in the third period, but the Wildcats came from behind to even the score and force overtime with the help of a pair of power play tallies. Angus Crookshank then scored his fourth goal of the night on a breakaway just 17 seconds into the extra period to seal the outcome.
"It was a discouraging effort, but at the same time there were some positives, I'll just have to find them on video," said Head Coach
Norm Bazin. "There are several areas to shore up, but the offense was there tonight. We have to be strong enough to hold a lead and continue to work to close a game."
Lee turned in his second two-goal game of the season, while all three of Berglund's points came off of helpers. Juniors
Jon McDonald (Livonia, Mich.) and
Reid Stefanson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) also registered multiple points on the night with two each.
After taking a slight edge in shots in the first half of the first period, the River Hawks were able to open the scoring for the first time in their last three games. Berglund fought to win a faceoff deep in his team's attacking zone and forced the puck loose for Stefanson, who sent it across the ice to junior
Chase Blackmun (Hudson, Wis.) for the wrist shot past the Wildcat goalie.
UNH netted the equalizer with five minutes to go in the period to send the teams into the first break even at 1-1. The teams then combined for five goals in the second, including back-to-back scores from Lee and Stefanson that helped the visitors take a 4-3 edge into the second intermission.
Lee started the third with his second goal of the outing, skating in from the blue line before firing top-shelf. Just over two minutes later, sophomore
Zach Kaiser (Orangeville, Ontario) stole the puck and slipped a back-hander on target to create a 6-3 advantage. However, the Wildcats retaliated to knot the game before finishing the comeback in overtime.
The River Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, February 9 when they host UConn at 5 p.m.
