SAN JOSES, Calif. – The UMass Lowell softball team (7-9) dropped a 9-1 decision in six innings at San Jose State (13-0) to open the Spartan Invitational on Thursday evening.
Â
"We didn't show up ready to play and the other team did," said Head Coach
Danielle Henderson. "Tomorrow is a new day and I think we will bounce back. We have been playing too well to let one game affect us."
Â
Junior
Courtney Cashman (Danvers, Mass.) led the squad with two hits (.600) and the lone RBI. Sophomore pitcher
Lovina Capria (Deltona, Fla.) recorded the decision in the circle to move to 4-5 on the year.
Â
The game started as a defensive stalemate with both sides combining for just two hits through the first two complete innings. The River Hawks plated the first run in the top of the third, though, when Cashman singled to center, knocking in freshman
Tori Mueller (Clovis, Calif.).
Â
The Spartans responded in the bottom of the inning, rallying for five runs on seven hits to pull away. A SJSU sacrifice fly in the fifth stretched the score to 6-1 before a three-run sixth that included a walk-off double secured a 9-1 decision for the home team.
Â
The River Hawks will play two more games at the Spartan Invitational tomorrow, Friday, March 15 against Iona and San Jose State at 1 and 3 p.m. ET, respectively.
