LOWELL, Mass. – In wet, sloppy conditions Holy Cross' Max Krause scored two second-half goals as the Crusaders knocked off the No. 16 UMass Lowell men's soccer team, 2-1, in the hosts non-conference finale on Tuesday night.
After Renatno Kauzlaric (Zagreb, Croatia) gave the River Hawks (6-2-2) the 1-0 lead in the 54th minute, Krause scored on a penalty kick and a deflected free kick in the 67th and 85th minutes, respectively to secure the Crusaders (2-3-3) upset.
Kauzlaric scored his second goal in as many games, as he took the pass from
Roko Prsa (Zagreb, Croatia) and after a few touches was able to knock the shot in off the keeper for the lead.
Krause knotted the score with his first tally of the season on shot from the spot after minutes of Crusaders' pressure.
Zach Rowell (Haverhill, Mass.) guessed the right way but the wet ball was able to find the back of the net after hitting his hands.
The game-winner from 25-yards out deflected off the wall and found the left corner of the open net.
In a scoreless first half, the River Hawks outshot Holy Cross, 7-3, with
Renato Kauzlaric (Zagreb, Croatia) having the best opportunity but his attempt was smothered by the visiting keeper in the 44th minute.
Jakov Basic (Zagreb, Croatia) and
Alejandro Osorio (Hollywood, Fla.) had chances that just missed hitting the woodwork in the 14th and 27th minutes, respectively.
UMass Lowell returns to conference play with a road trip to Long Island as the team takes on Stony Brook on September 28 at 7 p.m.
