River Hawks edged in series opener at Maine, 4-3

Freshman defenseman Chase Blackmun recorded his first career goal on Friday

ORONO, Maine – The UMass Lowell Hockey team was edged at Maine, 4-3 in Hockey East play on Friday night at Alfond Arena.

The River Hawks drop to 3-4-0 overall (0-2-0 HEA), while Maine improves to 3-3-1 overall (1-1-1 HEA) with the victory.

"We really started the way we wanted to, so I enjoyed the start, however it's a 60-minute hockey game," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "I thought we played really well for 25 minutes and maybe a three minute stint in the third when I thought we had good command."

Freshman forward Lucas Condotta (Georetown, Ontario) added a goal late for UMass Lowell with 2:26 to go, but it wasn't enough for the River Hawks. All three River Hawk goals were scored by freshmen. Condotta and junior defenseman Mattias Goransson (Slottsbron, Sweden) each recorded a game-high four shots on goal.

Patrick Shea and Tim Doherty added a pair of power play goals to give Maine a 4-2 lead at the end of the second period.

Chase Pearson tied the game at 2-2 for the Black Bears with his second goal in less than three minutes.

Freshman Sam Knoblauch (Rochester, Mich.) extended UMass Lowell's lead to 2-0 just 26 seconds into the second period for his third career tally. Maine answered the Knoblauch goal less than a minute later for Chase Pearson's fourth goal of the year.

Freshman defenseman Chase Blackmun (Hudson, Wis.) got the River Hawks on the scoreboard first with his first career goal just 4:38 into the game.

The River Hawks outshot the Black Bears, 14-5 in the opening frame. UMass Lowell outshot Maine, 30-27 for the game.

Junior goalie Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) stopped 23 shots, including 10 saves in the second period in his fifth start of the season. Maine's Jeremy Swayman registered 27 saves in his third win of the season, which included 13 stops in the middle stanza.

UMass Lowell returns to action on Saturday, November 3rd in the series finale at Maine. Game time from Alfond Arena is 7:35 p.m. The game will be televised live nationally on Fox College Sports and locally on WVII (Bangor) and WPME (Portland).
