River Hawks shutout Maine, 1-0 in series finale

Sam Knoblauch scored the lone goal in the win for the River Hawks and Chris Hernberg notched his sixth career shutout

ORONO, Maine – Freahman forward Sam Knobaluch (Rochester, Mich.) scored the only goal of the game and senior goalie Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) notched 24 saves in his sixth career shutout to lead the UMass Lowell Hockey team to a 1-0 victory at Maine on Saturday evening at Alfond Arena in Hockey East play.

The River Hawks improve to 4-4-0 (1-2-0 HEA) to get the series split, while Maine drops to 3-4-1 overall (1-2-1 HEA) in the losing effort.

"It was a great complete game, I thought it was our best effort of the season thus far," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "Chris Hernberg came up with some timely saves. I am very proud of the guys tonight."

Knoblauch got the River Hawks on the scoreboard just 5:32 into the third frame to stand up as the only goal for his team-leading fourth tally of the year. Knoblauch's goal came off a shot by Connor Sodergren (Tewksbury, Mass.) in the low slot.

The team skated to a scoreless first and second period, as the River Hawks owned a 17-5 shot advantage in the opening stanza and a 15-6 shot advantage in the second frame.

Hernberg stopped 13 shots in the third period in his third start of the year for UMass Lowell. Jeremy Swayman made a season-high 44 saves in his seventh start of the season for the Black Bears, which included 17 stops in the opening period and 15 saves in the second frame.

UMass Lowell went 4-for-4 on the penalty kill, including killing off a 5-minute major on a penalty to Jon McDonald. Senior forward Nick Master (Broomall, Pa.) totaled a game-high eight shots on goal and 17 faceoff wins (65%). Sophomore forward Charlie Levesque (Russell, Ont.) also added seven shots on goal in the victory for the River Hawks.

The River Hawks return to action on Friday, November 9th against New Hampshire. Game time on Military Appreciation Night from the Tsongas Center is 7:15 p.m.
