River Hawks take out Minutemen, 8-3 to cap four-point weekend

LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore forward Ryan Lohin (Chadds Ford, Pa.) notched a career-high four points (2g,2a) to lead the UMass Lowell Hockey team to a 8-3 victory against Massachusetts on Saturday night at the Tsongas Center in front of 5,508 fans in Hockey East play.

The River Hawks improve to 12-9-0 overall (8-6-0 HEA) with the win. The Minutemen drop to 9-9-0 overall (3-5-0 HEA) with the loss. UMass Lowell has now won seven of its last eight games in Hockey East play dating back to victory at UNH on November 10th.

Lohin and Colin O'Neill (Odenton, Md.) scored empty-net goals in the final two minutes to seal the win for the River Hawks.

Redshirt freshman Chris Schutz (Keller, Texas) added his first collegiate goal to make it a 5-2 game at 8:59 on the power play and Charlie Levesque (Russell, Ontario) scored to make it 6-3 with seven minutes left. The Minutemen added a goal to make it 5-3 on a goal from Mitchell Chaffee with less than 10 minutes left to play in the final period.

Lohin added a shorthanded marker at 1:42 in the third period for his sixth goal of the season and his second career shorthanded tally to make it a 4-2 contest.

Junior forward Ryan Dmowski (East Lyme, Conn.) gave the River Hawks a 3-2 lead to close out the second period, scoring his sixth marker of the season with just 34 seconds left in the period.

UMass Lowell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by John Edwardh (Calgary, Alta.) at 4:28 and Tyler Mueller's (Regina, Sask.) power play goal at 11:17.

Niko Hildenbrand got UMass on the board at 13:47 of the first to cut UMass Lowell's lead to 2-1. Philip Lagunov's power play tally tied the game at 8:09 of the second stanza.

Junior goaltender Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) made his third straight start for the River Hawks, making 26 stops, which included 11 saves in the third period in his 12th win of the season. Ryan Wischow totaled 14 saves in the losing effort for the Minutemen.

UMass Lowell returns to action on Friday, January 12th in the first game of two-game series at Arizona State. Game time from Oceanside Arena in Tempe, Ariz. is 9 p.m. (ET).
