BURLINGTON, Vt. – The UMass Lowell Hockey team was defeated by Vermont, 6-3 on Saturday night in Hockey East play at Gutterson Fieldhouse in the series finale.
The River Hawks fall to 14-11-0 overall (9-7-0 HEA), while Vermont improves to 5-15-4 overall (2-9-3 HEA) with the victory. UMass Lowell won two of three meetings against the Catamounts this season. Â
Ross Colton added a goal with 9:16 to play in the third period for his 12
th tally of the season to make it a 5-3 game, while Liam Coughlin added an empty netter for the hat trick with 1:37 to go.
Senior forward
John Edwardh (Calgary, Alta.) scored off a rebound from a
Chris Forney (Thief River Falls, Minn.) shot from the point on the power play to cut Vermont's lead to one goal at 4-3 with 1:37 left in the second period. Forney finished the night with two assists for the River Hawks.
Senior defenseman
Tommy Panico (Wall, N.J.) got the River Hawks on the board in the second period at 9:10 with a slapshot from the right point and then sophomore forward
Ryan Lohin (Chadds Ford, Pa.) tallied a power play marker less than three minutes later for his eighth goal of the year.
Liam Coughlin scored his second goal of the night in the middle frame on the power play just 1:32 into the period.
The Catamounts scored three goals in the first period in a span of 2:16 on goals by Alex Esposito, Coughlin and a tally by Anthony Petruzzelli.
Junior goaltender
Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) stopped 22 shots in his 17
th start of the season for UMass Lowell. UVM's Stefanos Lekkas recorded 35 stops in his fifth win of the season for the 'Cats.
The River Hawks return to action on Friday, January 26
th vs. Boston College in Hockey East play. Game time from the Tsongas Center is 7:15 p.m. The game will be televised regionally on New England Sports Network (NESN).
