River Hawks Close Out 2017 With Four Road Games

LOWELL, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell baseball team heads on the road for its final four game of 2017, heading to New Haven, Conn. for one last non-conference contest at Yale before a three-game series at Maine in Orono. 

River Hawk Rewind
The River Hawks dropped a 6-1 decision against Boston College on Senior Night, and could not pick up a win in their weekend set at Binghamton. Steve Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) led the offense with a home run and three RBI on the week. 

Leading the Flock
Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) sits atop the lineup with a .331 batting average, 52 hits and his 35 RBI, while he's second with 31 runs, two triples and six homers. Chris Sharpe (Burlington, Mass.) leads the team with 35 runs, seven long balls and 89 total bases, while the sophomore's 16 doubles are second in the conference and are the sixth-most in all of Division I. Sharpe has tripled four times and posts a .685 slugging percentage with 25 RBI as well. On the hill, Collin Duffley (Manchester, N.H.) and Andrew Ryan (Rochester, Mass.) lead the team with five wins apiece. Duffley's  two complete games, 66 strikeouts and his 2.71 ERA sit atop the pitching staff and among America East pitchers, while Nick Rand (Hyde Park, N.Y.) has a team-high six saves. As a team, the River Hawks are batting .257 and the staff is posting a 3.83 ERA.

Scouting Yale
The Bulldogs (27-16, 16-4 Ivy) are riding a three-game winning streak into Wednesday's matchup and are 9-3 at home in 2017. The lineup is lead by Tim DeGraw's .323 average and 31 RBI, while Griffen Dey has connected on 10 home runs. On the mound, Scott Politz is 8-2 with five complete games and 57 strikeouts, while his 4.10 ERA is a team-best. Yale is batting .287 with a 5.78 ERA. 

Scouting Maine
The Black Bears (17-24, 4-10) split an AE doubleheader with UMBC on Sunday to improve to 10-3 at home. Christopher Bec owns the team's best batting average with a .351, while his 53 hits and rank atop the lineup as well. Tyler Schwanz has driven in 28 runs and sits atop the lineup with five homers. The pitchers are paced by Justin Courtney's 4.12 ERA, four wins and 51 strikeouts. The Black Bears are batting .263 and have a staff ERA of 5.31.

UMass Lowell is 0-2 all-time against Yale, after the Bulldogs took 2015's meeting 8-7/

On May 4, Collin Duffley was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team, becoming eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-American honors. 

Record Setters...Part Deux
The 20 runs against Hartford on April 29 was the most UMass Lowell has scored since joining Division I in 2013, surpassing the previous high of 18 against UAlbany earlier in April. The River Hawks' 22 hits were also a program DI record. The River Hawks' 10 runs in the ninth inning in the UAlbany contest marked the most runs the team has scored in an inning since 2013, passing the seven runs in 15-1 game at UMBC.

Mai, oh Mai
Colby Maiola leads the team with 11 multi-RBI games and 15-multi hit games as well. The junior college transfer has connected on the team's only grand slam this season and is third on the team with 18 extra-base hits.

Power Surge
Through 43 games, this year's offense has connected on 36 home runs and have delivered multiple home runs in nine games, including a DI program-high four on February 25 against FDU, to lead the conference in total homers. Last season, the River Hawks hit 23 homers with four multi-home run games. 

Bullpen Magic
In the River Hawks' first five-game winning steak of the season, the bullpen allowed seven runs, five earned, in 19.1 innings with pitchers combining for 20 strikeouts.

Hangin' 11
The 11 runs against UConn marked the second consecutive season-opening win that the River Hawks crossed the plate 11 times. Last season, UMass Lowell defeated Nicholls State, 11-2, to begin 2016 1-0. It also marks the third time in DI that the River Hawks scored more than 10 runs in their first win of the season (14, vs. Temple, 2014).

The River Hawks swept the AE Weekly Awards on 5.2, with Russ Olive (Chelmsford, Mass.) being named POTW, Ryan picking up Pitcher of the Week and Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) earning Rookie of the Week honors ... Kuzia picked up AE Pitcher of the Week honors (4.25) ... Maiola and Ryan were named the America East Player and Pitcher of the Week (4.11) ... Duffley picked up his first career America East Pitcher of the Week award (4.4) ... Polichetti was named America East Rookie of the Week for the second straight week (3.21) ... Sharpe and Polichetti were named the America East Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively (3.14) ... Austin Young became the fifth River Hawk to be named AE Rookie of the Week (2.28) ... Olive earned River Hawk of the Week and America East Player of the Week accolades (2.21).
