LOWELL, Mass. -- The UMass Lowell Hockey team defeated Maine, 3-2 in Hockey East play on Friday night at the Tsongas Center in front of 4,537 fans.
With the victory, UMass Lowell improves to 4-5-0 overall and 1-4-0 in Hockey East games. The Black Bears drp to 2-5-0 overall (1-2-0 HEA).
Senior defenseman
Chris Forney (Thief River Falls, Minn.) scored the game-winning power play tally with a blast from the left point with 9:46 left in the game to seal the win for the River Hawks.Â
Maine's Emil Westerlund opened the scoring in the game at 10:01 of the second period, after the teams skated to a scoreless opening frame. Maine owned a 12-5 shot advantage in the first period of play.Â
Sophomore forward
Colin O'Neill (Odenton, Md.) tied the game at 1-1 with a shorthanded tally less than four minutes later for his first marker of the season. Westerlund scored his second of the game on the power play with 4:43 left in the second to give the Black Bears a 2-1 lead.Â
Sophomore alternate captain
Ryan Lohin (Chadds Ford, Pa.) tied the game at 2-2 for his second goal of the season with just 1:36 left in the middle stanza.
Junior goaltender
Christoffer Hernberg (Espoo, Finland) totaled 27 stops in his fourth win of the season, while Maine's Rob McGovern posted 24 saves in the losing effort.Â
Senior forward
Jake Kamrass (Atlanta, Ga.) amassed a game-high five shots on goal for the River Hawks in the victory.
The River Hawks finish the series with Maine on Saturday, November 5th at the Tsongas Center. Game time is 4 p.m. on Pucks and Paws Day.Â
