No. 5 River Hawks downed by New Hampshire, 4-3 in season opener

LOWELL, Mass. –
The No. 5 UMass Lowell Hockey team was defeated by Hockey East rival New Hampshire, 4-3 in the season opener on Friday night in front of 5,426 fans at the Tsongas Center.

New Hampshire gained a 3-2 advantage with 9:55 left in the game on a goal by Ara Nazarian, but senior forward Jake Kamrass (Atlanta, Ga.) evened the game with just 1:14 left in the contest with an extra attacker tally. Shane Eiserman potted the game-winner for the Wildcats with just 14 seconds left in regulation to seal the game.

UMass Lowell tied the game at 2-2 on a power play marker from John Edwardh (Calgary, Alta.) just 4:52 into the third.

The Wildcats scored two goals in the second period just 45 seconds apart on goals by Marcus Vela and Frankie Cefalu, which came via the power play.

Junior forward Connor Wilson (Calgary, Alta.) tallied the first goal of the game with a wrister from the right faceoff circle, which beat UNH goalie Danny Tirone glove side. Wilson's scored his seventh career goal just 6:06 into the opening frame.

Sophomore goaltender Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) stopped 25 shots in his 35th career start, which included 13 saves in the second period for the River Hawks. Tirone recorded 20 saves in the victory for UNH.

UMass Lowell finished the night 2-for-7 on the power play. Junior forward Nick Master (Broomall, Pa.) won 18 of 26 faceoffs (69%) to lead the River Hawks, while sophomore forward Ryan Lohin (Chadds Ford, Pa.) also chipped in with 11 faceoff victories in the losing effort. 

The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 7th at New Hampshire in league play. Game time from the Whittemore Center is 7 p.m. The game can been seen live on ESPN3 or the Watch ESPN Mobile App.
