AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 6 UMass Lowell Hockey team edged Massachusetts, 2-1 on Saturday night at the Mullins Center in non-conference play.

With the victory, the River Hawks improve their overall record to 15-5-3, while the Minutemen drop to 5-16-2 with the loss. UMass Lowell extended its unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1), which marks the longest current unbeaten streak in the nation. 

UMass Lowell began defense of the Alumni Cup with the first of three matchups with the Minutemen this season. UMass Lowell have won the Alumni Cup in each of the last five seasons.  

Freshman forward Ryan Lohin (Chadds Ford, Pa.) got the River Hawks on the scoreboard first with a shot right off the faceoff that beat UMass' Ryan Wischow low glove side for his fourth career goal. The River Hawks outshot UMass, 18 to 7 in the first, which included a team-high three shots and six faceoff wins by Lohin in the opening frame.

Junior forward Chris Forney (Thief River Falls, Minn.) delivered on the power play with his second tally of the year with 9:59 left in the middle stanza to give the River Hawks a 2-0 lead. Forney grabbed a rebound off a shot by Lohin from the right faceoff circle and tapped it in at the bottom of the left circle.

Kurt Keats cut UMass Lowell's lead to 2-1 with his fifth of the season with 7:13 left in the game.

UMass Lowell outshot the Minutemen, 37-15 for the game, which also included an 11-3 advantage in the second stanza. Lohin and Ryan Dmowski (East Lyme, Conn.) each notched a game-high five shots on goal.

The River Hawks went 1-for-6 on the power play and a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. Lohin won a game-high 13 faceoffs, while sophomore Nick Master (Broomall, Pa.) also had a solid night, winning 12-of-14 (86%).

Freshman goaltender Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) earned the start and finished the game with 14 saves for the River Hawks. Wischow got the start for the Minutemen, stopping 35 shots in the losing effort.

UMass Lowell returns to Hockey East action on Friday, January 20^th vs. Providence. Game time from the Tsongas Center is 7:15 p.m.
