LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell senior goaltender Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.,) who led the River Hawks to the NCAA East Regional Final, has signed a one-year entry level contract with the National Hockey League Anaheim Ducks.
The 23-year old posted a 24-10-5 record, 1.83 goals-against average (GAA), .934 save percentage (SV%) and seven shutouts with the Riverhawks this season. Financial terms of the contract have not been disclosed, but it is expected that Boyle will report to the Ducks' American Hockey League afiliate in San Antonio.
"We are thrilled for Kevin to sign his NHL deal with the Anaheim Ducks," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "Kevin has been rewarded for a great deal of hard work and perseverance through adversity. He will graduate in May from a world class university and begin his journey of becoming a full time NHL player with a great organization."
The 6-2, 200-pounder was honored by Hockey East as a co-winner of the league's Player of the Year Award. He was the first player ever so honored while being named a Second-Team All-Conference selection. He was also named Hockey East Tournament MVP after going 3-1-0 with a 1.24 GAA and .958 SV% in four games. Boyle is one of five finalists for the 2016 Mike Richter Award, given to the nation's most outstanding goaltender.
Boyle ranked tied for fourth in the nation in GAA, fifth in wins, tied for sixth in SV%, tied for third in shutouts and starts (39), and second in minutes played (2363:34). The senior netminder established a single-season school record in shutouts and broke current Anaheim Goaltending Consultant Dwayne Roloson's school record for minutes played (2,342 in 1993-94). He also posted a school-record 58 saves in the triple-overtime Hockey East Semifinal victory against Providence on Mar. 18, 2016.
In two seasons with UMass Lowell, Boyle went 42-19-11 with a 2.10 GAA, .925 SV% and 10 shutouts in 73 games. He is second on the career list for GAA, SV% and winning percentage and is tied for third all-time for wins.
