DELAND, Fla. – Sophomore
Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) recorded her second hat trick of the year in addition to two assists for a season-high five points, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (1-8) dropped a hard-fought, 12-11 decision at Stetson (5-4) on Friday evening.
The game was evenly matched on both sides of the ball. The Hatters took a slim, 23-20 edge in shots on goal, while both sides picked up 17 ground balls with seven caused turnovers each.
Sokol was one of eight goal scorers for the River Hawks. Sophomore
Kaylan DiModugno (Deer Park, N.Y.) added two goals, while freshmen
Jane Dudley (Duxbury, Mass.) and
Paige MacEachern (Lynnfield, Mass.) chipped in with one goal and one assist apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper
Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) totaled 11 saves in the complete-game performance.
Stetson opened the scoring less than three minutes into play, but the River Hawks answered just over a minute later when Sokol found freshman
Rebecca Idson (East Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) for the shot on goal. The Hatters would score three of the next four, though, to pull ahead, 4-2, with 18:23 remaining in the first half.
MacEachern found the net for UMass Lowell, as the teams traded two goals apiece in the next seven minutes to make the score 6-4 in favor of the home team at 10:33 in the first. Dimodugno and junior
Kristy Robertson (Kingston, N.H.) logged back-to-back goals to knot the score at 6-6 with just over seven minutes left in the half, but Stetson would respond by outscoring the visitors, 3-1, in the waning minutes to take a slight, 9-7 edge into halftime.
UMass Lowell came out of the break firing, tallying the first three goals of the second half, including a pair of unassisted scores for Sokol, to give the squad its first lead of the night at 10-9 with 15:08 still to go in the contest. The River Hawks took the lead once more off the stick of Dudley at 7:57.
However, the Hatters regained the upper hand following a goal and assist from Hallie Merz. UMass Lowell battled through the final four minutes, but the squad was unable to convert, as Stetson sealed the closely-contested, 12-11 decision.
