River Hawks Drop 2-1 Decision Against Canisius

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell men's soccer team dropped a non-conference clash with the Canisius Golden Griffins, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Cushing Field.

"The frustration is setting in a little bit right now, we had opportunities to get out the first half up one or two goals," said Head Coach Christian Figueroa. "I think our concentration let us down in the first half, but I thought the game plan went as well as we wanted it to go. We had opportunities all game, and it was just tough to have them slip away."

The River Hawks (3-3) outshot the Golden Griffins (2-3-1) 5-3 in the scoreless first half, including having the games' only shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.

Both teams picked up the offense in the second half, with Jay Marchand (North Andover, Mass.) striking first for UMass Lowell in the 55th minute. The senior received a pass from Wuilito Fernandes (Praia, Cape Verde) and sent a rocket off the crossbar and in from just inside the 18-yard box.

The lead was short lived, however, as Chris Berardi floated a header over Austin Kroll's (Baltimore, Md.) head to knot up the score in the 57th minute. Moments later in the 65th minute, Matthew Santos gave the Golden Griffins a 2-1 lead when his shot trickled over the line into the left corner.

UMass Lowell outshot Canisius 15-12, Marchand and Fernandes each had a game-high two shots. Andrew Coughlin made five saves for his second win of the season. Kroll stopped two shots in the effort.

The River Hawks return to action on Friday, September 18 against Hartwick at 8 p.m.
