LOWELL, Mass. -- The No. 5 UMass Lowell Hockey team fell to UConn, 2-1, in Hockey East action on Saturday afternoon in front of 5,216 fans at the Tsongas Center.
The River Hawks fall to 10-3-4 (6-2-3 HEA) with the loss, while the Huskies improve to 5-10-0 overall and 3-7-0 in league play.
Junior forward
Adam Chapie (Oxford, Mich.) got the River Hawks on the board first on the power play with his eighth goal of the season with five seconds left in the second period. Chapie got the feed on a cross slot pass from junior defenseman
Dylan Zink (Madison, Wis.) and beat UConn goalie Rob Nichols with a backdoor tally.
The Huskies scored both of their goals in the third period as Shawn Pauly's second goal of the season tied the game at 1-1 at 8:34 and Tage Thompson tallied his seventh of the season less than five minutes later at 13:03 to earn the weekend sweep for UConn.
Senior forward
Ryan McGrath (O'Fallon, Mo.) was stopped on a penalty shot by Nichols at 9:06 of the third period, after he got tripped up by Derek Pratt on a rush to the net.
The teams skated to a scoreless first period and the River Hawks outshot UConn, 14-4 in the opening frame.
UConn outshot UMass Lowell, 33-31 for the game, which included a 19-7 shot advantage in the third period.
Nichols made 30 saves in his fifth win of the season, while senior goaltender
Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.) stopped 31 shots by the Huskies in the losing effort.
