LOWELL, Mass. -- Senior goaltender Kevin Boyle (Manalapan, N.J.) turned away 23 shots to help the UMass Lowell hockey team secure a 2-1 victory against Colorado College on Saturday evening at the Tsongas Center in front of 3,765 fans.

With the decision, the River Hawks completed the two-game home sweep against the Tigers and improved to 3-0-0 on the young season.

"We were ecstatic to pick up some points tonight," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin. "Tonight was a very even hockey game, the opponent had a lot more urgency tonight and we tried to match that. There were several opportunities to break it open but we didn't materialize. They had good goaltending and so did we, the weekend was full of that."

In what turned out to be a very evenly matched contest, UMass Lowell and Colorado College traded shots all night, with each squad tallying 24 in the outing.

Senior forward Adam Chapie (Oxford, Mich.) notched his second goal of the season 15:05 into the first period to put the River Hawks up, 1-0. Junior defenseman Evan Campbell (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) collected the puck and pushed it up to Niklas Folin (Kungsbacka, Sweden), who beat a Tiger defender before passing it forward to Chapie to finish the play. Chapie had a game-best four shots on goal on the night.

UMass Lowell tacked on another goal in the second period thanks to Ryan McGrath (O'Fallon, Mo.), who tallied his second goal in two games. The squad extended their lead to 2-0 after initial shots from senior co-captain A.J. White (Dearborn, Mich.) and Campbell.

The Tigers answered in the second period, though, as freshman forward Trey Bradley found the back of the net to cut the River Hawks lead to 2-1. Sophomore Teemu Kivihalme backhanded a shot towards the goal, and although Boyle was there to make the initial save, he could not get the rebound before Bradley poked it in for the team's first goal of the night.

Senior co-captain Michael Kapla (Eau Claire, Wis.) looked to add an insurance goal for his team with four minutes to play in the game when his slap shot went wide, hitting the post.

After Colorado College's Bradley got one back for the visitors, Boyle stood tall, rallying for 19 saves over the final two periods.

The River Hawks' special teams continued to show their strength, going a perfect 3 for 3 on the penalty kill in the contest, improving to 12 for 12 on the season.

Saturday's contest marked the 13th meeting between UMass Lowell and Colorado College in the sport of men's ice hockey. The Tigers still own a slight, 7-6-0 lead in the all-time series. The River Hawks are set to travel to Merrimack on Friday, October 23 for their first road game of the season.
