SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS:
UMass Lowell is ranked 9th in both the USCHO and USA Hockey Magazine polls and have been nationally ranked for 68 consecutive weeks. Last Friday the River Hawks defeated RPI, 3-0, in the season and home opener.  The home team took a 2-0 first period lead and added a goal early in the second period.  Two of UMass Lowell's three goals came on the power play.  UMass Lowell returns their top six scorers and starting goaltender from a team that went 21-12-6 a year ago.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS: Colorado College is 0-2-0 after dropping their first two games of the year to Massachusetts, last weekend, 6-3 and 4-3, in Colorado Springs.  Freshmen forward Trey Bradley leads the Tigers with two goals while sophomore defenseman Teemu Kivihalme leads in scoring with three points (1g, 2a.)  Goalies freshman Jacob Nehama and junior Tyler Marble each had a start during the weekend.

LAST TIME OUT: The River Hawks notched a 3-0 victory against the Rensselaer in the season opener.  A. J. White, Evan Campbell and Adam Chapie scored goals.  Campbell also had an assist. Senior goalie Kevin Boyle picked up his fourth River Hawk shutout making 27 saves including 13 in the third period.

CLEAN SHEET FIRST TIME OUT: UMass Lowell's 3-0 victory was the team's first shutout in a home opener and only the second shutout  ever in the season's first game.  The last season-opening shutout came against St. Lawrence at the Ice Breaker Tournament, in Omaha, on Oct. 9, 2009.  Carter Hutton, now playing for the NHL's Nashville Predators, had 24 saves in that one.

CIRCLE OF DOMINANCE: UMass Lowell controlled the face-off circle in the season opener winning 47 of 74 draws (63.5%).  Senior center Michael Fallon led the way winning 13 of 16 (81.3%) puck drops.  Evan Campbell won 14 of 24 face-offs (58.3%) and Joe Gambardella had a 9-4 edge (69.2%).

PUT IT ON THE BOARD: With the win against RPI UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin earned his 100th coaching win behind the River Hawk bench.  Bazin becames the third River Hawk coach hit that milestone and the third winningest coach in the school's history.  He is also the fastest to the 100 win mark.  His record of 100-47-13, in a four-plus year period (2011-15,) moves Bazin ahead of Bruce Crowder (1991-96, 99-75-19) on the UMass Lowell all-time win list.  Billy Riley tops the all-time win list with 363 wins (363-270-22).  Blaise MacDonald is second (150-178-42.)  Bazin's .666 winning percentage is tops among UMass Lowell coaches.  His first UMass Lowell win came against Minnesota State, 4-2, on October 14, 2011.  Including his three years behind the Hamilton bench, Bazin carries all-time mark of 138-78-20.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. COLORADO COLLEGE: UMass Lowell and Colorado College will meet for the 12th time tonight and the first time ever at the Tsongas Center.  The visitors hold an edge in the all time series, 7-4-0.  UMass Lowell won the last meeting between the two teams, 3-1, October 20, 2012 getting goals from Ryan McGrath, Joe Pendenza and Stephen Buco.  Pendenza's third period goal was the game winner.  UMass Lowell and Colorado College have split four games played at the Tully Forum.

BACK TO BACK: UMass Lowell is playing games on back-to-back nights for the first time this season.  A year ago the River Hawks were 9-4-1 on the first of consecutive nights, but only 6-5-3 on the second night.

THE CC CONNECTION: UMass Lowell Head Coach Norm Bazin spent eight years at Colorado College as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator and was instrumental in leading the Tigers to a 205-102-22 overall record (.623) and a 131-76-17 clip in WCHA play (.585).  During Bazin's tenure, Colorado College made six trips to the NCAA Tournament - four quarterfinal bids and a Midwest Region title/Frozen Four appearance in 2005 - and won the WCHA regular season title three times.  Among the players Bazin mentored include 19 WCHA all-stars, 13 All-Americans and two Hobey Baker Memorial Award recipients in Peter Sejna (2003) and Marty Sertich (2005). Additionally, 12 players during Bazin's time went on to play in the NHL.

ON THE NATIONAL STAGE!: UMass Lowell has been nationally ranked, in either the USCHO or USA Today poll, for 68 consecutive weeks.  The stretch began when UMass Lowell appeared at #20 in the USCHO Poll on January 7, 2013.  Of those 68 weeks more than half, 40, have been spent in the top ten.

Quotes from the Coach
Norm Bazin on Colorado College
"There a very good hockey team; they've got 14 freshmen, as we did last year, they've got a lot of enthusiasm; they skate extremely well.  They are a little faster than our opponent last weekend so it's going to be a tall task for us this weekend."

Norm Bazin on the UMass Lowell objectives
"We have to have energy, that's how we play our game.  We have to be good on the forecheck, we have to defend with our sticks on the ice.  It's more about habits and how we're playing the game and how we're executing the game plan than it is about the opponent."

Norm Bazin on the Home Crowd
"The student section was especially vibrant.  To have them show up in droves is simply terrific for the kids and they fed off that energy."
