Williams Scores 2k, River Hawks Edged By Stony Brook

Senior guard Akeem Williams became the fifth player in UMass Lowell men's basketball history to surpass the 2,000 point mark in his career, a milestone overshadowed by the River Hawks 78-68 loss to Stony Brook at the Tsongas Center.

The River Hawks fall to 8-17, 6-7 in America East and will host Hartford on Wednesday night while Stony Brook improves to 18-8 and 10-2 in conference play and will host UMBC on Wednesday.

Williams, who has had a well decorated career as a River Hawk, came into the contest 18 points shy of 2,000 points. The Brockton, Mass., native scored a game-high 20 points including, a 3-pointer with a defender draped all over him in the final minutes of the game to break the 2k barrier and is now 31 points away from tying Bill Quirk ('66-'70) for fourth on the programs scoring list.

Sophomore Carlos Taylor (Philadelphia, PA.) scored a career-high 15 points off the bench while netting a career-high five 3-pointers in a losing effort. Taylor and Williams combined to hit eight of the teams 11 3-point attempts.
Stony Brook hopped out to a quick start, pulling ahead 6-1 and eventually 13-5 before the River Hawks responded. Williams drove the lane and found senior Antonio Bivins (Miami, Fla.) for an emphatic dunk in traffic to make it 17-12. Bivins wasn't done, coming down on the defensive end and pinning Stony Brooks Ahmad Walker's layup attempt against the glass.
Taylor ended a 12-2 Seawolves run, swishing through his first three of the year and what would be the start of a 9-2 run which pulled the River Hawks to 29-21 at the half.

Seawolves center Jameel Warney, sixth in the nation in field goal percentage finished 7-of-13 with 19 points and seven rebounds in 25 minutes of action.

A little over five minutes into the second half Stony Brook went on a 12-3 run punctuated by two dunks, the first by Walker following a steal and then Warney who rolled through the lane for the two-handed flush.The Seawolves, now winners of nine of their last eleven, watched their lead balloon to 21 before UMass Lowell cut the lead to just eight in the final minute.

Williams rounded out his stat line with seven rebounds, nine assists and a steal.

Junior Mark Cornelius (Westford, Mass.) scored 13 points (2-4 3FG) and aired for four rebounds. Cornelius and Taylor combined to score a season-high 34 bench points for the River Hawks who also had contributions from Parris Massey (Boston, Mass.) who accumulated six point and four blocks.
