River Hawks Come up Short in Binghamton, 4-0

Box Score WEST HARTFORD, Conn. –  Down by two at the half UMass Lowell Women's Soccer battled, but could not come back as they fell to Binghamton University, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex in vestal, N.Y.

"We've got some lofty goals," said Head Coach Joel Bancroft.  "This was disappointing; we need a better effort than this."

The loss was the second straight for the River Hawks.  Their record drops to 4-8-0 overall and 1-2-0 in America East Conference play.  Binghamton improves to 5-6-1 / 1-0-1.  It was the second consecutive year in which Binghamton has beaten UMass Lowell by a 4-0 count.  the Bearcats have won all four meetings between the two teams.

The River Hawks found themselves having to battle from behind almost from the outset.  Emily Nuss put the home team on top in the fifth minute of play.  She hit the right corner of the net with a drive from 25 yards out.  It was the first of two goals for Nuss who also had an assist.

Stephani Church added a goal in the 25th minute to make it 2-0 at the half.

"They were very aggressive and put us under a great deal of pressure, but we regrouped at the half," said Bancroft.  "The senior leaders spoke to the team and the team responded."

Eventually UMass Lowell ran out of gas and Binghamton added two goals in the final 12 minutes of the contest.  Nuss and Valerie McNamara, with an assist from Nuss, got the markers.

Binghamton outshot the River Hawks, 18-8 overall and 11-3 on target.  Senior keepers Jane Hatzikonstantis (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Jill Carlson (Lexington, Mass.) split the time in net.  Each allowed two goals.  Hatzikonstantis had three saves and Carlson was credited with two.  

Binghamton, in what was a physical contest that drew 28 fouls, also had an edge in corner kicks, 7-1.

UMass Lowell returns to the friendly confines of the Cushing Sports Complex on Thursday, October 9 at 7:00 P.M., to host the University of Albany.  The River Hawks have won three of five home contests.
