Doug Carr, River Hawks Honored by Hockey East

Goalie and Team earn weekly awards

Box Score UMass Lowell senior goaltender Doug Carr (Hanover, Mass.) was named the "Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week" after stopping 56 of 60 shots as the ninth ranked River Hawks tied and defeated #11 Clarkson during the weekend.

UMass Lowell was also named the "Hockey East Team of the Week."

The River Hawks battled Clarkson to a 1-1 tie Friday night and then fought back from two-goals down to defeat the Golden Knights, 4-3, Saturday afternoon.  Carr made 27 saves the first night and 29 the second as he picked up his seventh win of the season.

"Doug Carr had an outstanding weekend getting us three of four points from a tough non-league opponent," said Head Coach Norm Bazin.

Carr's biggest stops may have come in Friday's match up. The 6-foot-2 inch goalie frustrated Clarkson sniper Ben Sexton with a blocker save and stoned Allan McPherson with a left pad save with the game on the line.  Saturday Carr made several key stops as the River Hawks battled from behind.

Carr and creasemate sophomore Connor Hellebuyck (Commerce, Mich.) both carry 1.75 Goals Against Averages putting them at the top of the national stat board.

The weekend also demonstrated the hockey team's resilience.  Down two goals before the game was six minutes old the River Hawks battled back to tie the game in the second period and then got the game winner when senior center Joseph Pendenza (Wilmington, Mass.) redirected a perfect pass from senior forward Derek Arnold (Foxboro, Mass.) into the Clarkson net midway through the final period.  Four different players scored goals in the game; eight picked up points.

"We needed that type of team effort to finish up our non-conference schedule this past weekend," said Bazin.

UMass Lowell went 10-3-1 in non-conference games.  The team's 14 remaining games on the schedule are all Hockey East conference match ups.

Hockey East also honored New Hampshire forward Matt Willows as the "Warrior Hockey East Play of the Week" and Vermont forward Mario Puskarich as the "Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week."

UMass Lowell will return to action against Northeastern Saturday, January 11th, in the second weekend of Frozen Fenway.  The teams are schedule to faceoff at 2:15 pm.

The River Hawks will return to the Tsongas Center Friday January 17th to host the University of Maine.
