Merrill, Smith combine for 11 kills; Dartmouth, Marist next

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2013) – Freshman OH Corinne Horanzy compiled 16 kills to lead the University of Hartford over UMass Lowell, 3-0, Friday afternoon in the first round of the Marist College Volley in the Valley at the McCann Arena.
 
Game scores favored Hartford 26-24, 25-15 and 25-17.
 
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-3 and meets Dartmouth College Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and the host Red Foxes at 6:00. Hartford improved to 2-4.
 
Junior OH Ella Merrill (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) registered six kills and two blocks while junior MH Anisa Smith (Moraga, Calif.) added five kills, six digs and four blocks. Freshman MH Elia Ahzi (San Diego, Calif.) chipped in four kills and three blocks while junior setter Kamiren Humphrey (Tucson, Ariz.) dished out 17 assists.
 
Horanzy also added eight digs and hit .303 (16 kills, six errors, 33 attacks) while senior OH Dionna Kirton chipped in seven kills and 10 digs. Junior setter Jackie Tamburri dished out 32 assists.
 
In the first set, UMass Lowell battled from a 19-6 deficit to grab a 21-20 lead on a kill by Smith. UMass Lowell had a 24-23 lead, but the Hawks rallied behind three straight points, including a pair of blocks by sophomore OH Chandler Goodwin.
 
In both the second and third sets, Hartford jumped out to early leads and never looked back en route to the win.
