NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2013) – Niagara University scored a pair of goals in the opening five minutes and capitalized on three set pieces en route to a 4-1 victory over UMass Lowell Friday afternoon in a non-conference men's soccer clash at Niagara Field.
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-3 entering Sunday's match at Canisius (1:00).
Niagara improved to 1-2 and meets San Diego State Friday (4:00) and Virginia Commonwealth University Sunday (3:30) at the University of Akron Tournament next weekend.
UMass Lowell surrendered goals in the second and fifth minutes and was unable to recover. Freshman M Nick Watson had a hand in all four goals as he set up sophomore M Julian Ekeze, who roped a shot over the reach of senior GK

Watson opened his account for the season shortly after sophomore M Tim Magnusson was ruled to have been tripped in the box. Watson stroked the penalty into the low left corner for a 2-0 lead.

Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) cut the deficit in half in the 20
th minute when he took a centering pass from senior M
Daniel Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) and slotted into the low right corner from just outside the box.
In the 62
nd, Watson steered a free kick to junior F Callum Willmott, who headed home. The Purple Eagles capitalized on another set piece in the 65
th minute when freshman B Coletun Long headed home a Watson corner kick at the far post.
Niagara outshot UMass Lowell 12-10 overall, but shots on target were even at 5-5. Maierle had one save while sophomore William Banahene stopped four shots for Niagara.
