UNH Defeats UMass Lowell in America East Opener, 3-0

Anadon leads River Hawks with season-high 11 kills; at UMBC Friday

Freshman OH Ana Anadon (Carlsbad, Calif.) posted a season-high 11 kills, but it wasn't enough as the University of New Hampshire defeated UMass Lowell, 3-0, Friday night in the America East Conference opening match at the Costello Athletic Center.
 
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-12 overall and 0-1 in America East entering next Friday's match at UMBC (7:00). UNH improved to 7-10 overall and 1-0 in the Conference and visits Stony Brook next Friday (7:30).
 
Game scores favored the Wildcats 27-25, 25-18 and 25-22. In the first set, the River Hawks turned a 14-11 deficit into a 20-17 lead behind kills from Young, Smith, senior OH Brooke Peterson (Del Mar, Calif.) and Anadon, but UNH came back to grab a 23-21 lead. With the score knotted at 25-25, the Wildcats capitalized on a pair of errors to seal the win.
 
The Wildcats emerged from a 22-22 tie in the third set behind kills from sophomore MB Brenna Buckwalter and sophomore OH Abby Brinkman, as well as an ace from junior Sam Henke.
 
Anadon also added two blocks while junior OH Ella Merrill (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.), returning from a two-week hiatus due to an injury, added five kills and four digs. Freshman OH Megan Young (Westlake Village, Calif.) and junior MH Anisa Smith (Moraga, Calif.) each chipped in four kills while Smith had three blocks.
 
Senior setter Olivia Parkins (Dracut, Mass.) compiled 18 assists and seven digs while senior libero Carolyn Eddy (Dracut, Mass.) had a team-high 11 digs.
 
Sophomore OH Victoria Forrest led UNH with 14 kills and 12 digs while hitting .303 (14 kills, four errors, 33 attacks). Junior MB Delaney Dameron added 11 kills and two blocks while hitting .412 (11-4-17). Buckwalter chipped in nine kills while junior setter Taylor Dunklau dished out 38 assists and led the team with 14 digs.
