Struggles Continue in 3-0 Loss to St. John's

UMass Lowell opens America East Conference play Friday at home against UNH

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (Sept. 21, 2013) – Sophomore OH Yaidi Santiago compiled nine kills and hit .571 to lead St. John's University over UMass Lowell, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in the final match of the Bryant University Tournament at the  Chace Athletic Center.
 
With the loss, UMass Lowell, in its inaugural Division I season, slipped to 0-11 and hosts the University of New Hampshire Friday (7:00) in its America East Conference opener.
 
St. John's improved to 10-4 and meets the host Bulldogs tonight at 7:00.
 
Game scores favored the Red Storm 25-9, 25-4 and 25-10.
 
Freshman MH Lauren Bennett (Wilmington, Mass.) led UMass Lowell with four kills while freshman OH Megan Young (Westlake Village, Calif.) and junior MH Anisa Smith (Moraga, Calif.) each chipped in three kills. Senior libero Carolyn Eddy (Dracut, Mass.) led the defense with 16 digs.
 
Santiago compiled nine kills with one error on 14 attacks (.571) while junior OH Aleksadra Wachowicz added eight kills and four digs while hitting .368 (8-1-19). Sophomore setter Deniz Mutlugil dished out 20 assists.
 
Earlier Saturday, UMass Lowell suffered a 3-0 loss to Princeton (25-10, 25-19, 25-16) despite seven kills and three digs from Young and five kills and four digs from Smith.
